This book takes us all beyond the surface and into the deep. What may have started out as well intended policies for Tribal families, have disappointed, crushed and destroyed those same people. If you want an inside view of life on a reservation, this book is for you.
I loved this book so much because I can relate personally to this family. I greatly admire everything Roland was able to accomplish, after the great feat of overcoming alcoholism and drug addiction. I also greatly admire everything Beth did to take in and care for family, kids, and grandkids. I would recommend this book to everyone!!
"Dying in Indian Country," will remove the blinders from your eyes and you will find out that government money rarely solves problems. It creates problems. You will find yourself transported to a place where pain is a constant. Dignity stolen. Elizabeth Morris has a gift for bringing you into the lives of those she loves. You feel their despair and then you experience hope as her family begins their journey to wholeness. I couldn't put the book down. You won't regret reading this book. Elizabeth Morris is a woman to be admired and her husband, Roland, a man of integrity.I originally read this on an ebook. Then purchased hard copies. One to pass around and one to keep in my book collection.
After living on an Indian Reservation for more than 20 years of my life, I can say that everything Lisa Morris says and has experienced is true and more. What people see in TV and movies is nowhere near to the reality of what Reservation life is really like today, and most Tribal governments will do anything to hide the abuse and corruption going on in Indian Country to keep from losing their government sponsored yearly welfare grants. I commend Lisa Morris for coming forward and speaking the truth about the reality of what is really going on in modern day reservations in the United States. Even more I commend her husband Roland Morris for being a voice of reason for other Native Americans like himself who see the corruption but are too afraid to take a stand against it and withdraw from it seeing that the government sponsored welfare system is not the answer to life's problems. If you or anyone you know lives on a reservation and is tired of the high rate of corruption going on, then read this book and then share it with a friend. God bless.
The author advocates doing away with reservations and programs that help Native Americans. This is not something I can agree with. These rights are legally binding agreements with the US government. Also it is written from a non-native, white privilege perspective. The more I read that angrier I became. Instead of trying to change things on a reservation not home to her spouse, why not do it on his home reservation. I lived for 40 years on an Indian Reservation in Montana also, there is abuse by tribal governments on all reservations, just as there is abuse in all areas of government in this country. I am afraid I just could not past the whining tone, which appear to be somewhat vindictive and related to her husband's years of active alcoholism. From that to extreme religious fundamentalism.... it was too much.
A paid ad kept showing up in my Facebook newsfeed for this book -ostensibly about life on the Rez and in Indian Country. So, I bought it and commenced reading. Wow. It claims to be about my home rez. I do not know this family about whom the author claims to speak. I came back to to check it out. Lo and behold, this is a "revised" edition of a previous edition authored by "Beth Ward" who must have taken Carrie Underwood's "I don't even know my last name" song to heart. Maybe it's Hallelujah Michele Bachmann writing under a pen name.
Yes, there are problems here on the rez - but not as widespread as whoever the heck the author(s?) are would have the reader believe in order to spew anti-native propaganda, venom, lies and BS so as to abrogate all sacred Treaty Rights. See, e.g. http//nativeamericannetroots.net/diary/954
